Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind and multidisabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 36,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.

Our services literally span a lifetime including five campuses in Talladega, ten regional centers located in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Tuscumbia, Opelika and Decatur with programs that range from early and senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings and a manufacturing facility that is the state's largest employer of adults who are blind and deaf.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


  • Must possess high school diploma or equivalent including or supplemented by courses in computers and business practices.
  • Must have knowledge of and full time work experience in office practices, procedures, equipment, office management and computer programs, etc. with a minimum of three (3) years documented successful related work experience.
  • Must possess ability to utilize a computer efficiently (to include word processing, payroll data collection, reporting, memos, charts, and other computer functions).
  • Must have knowledge of Windows XP, FileMaker Pro, Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Must be mature, self-motivated, possess good organizational skills and ability to exercise sound judgment and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must possess good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally with AIDB staff, visitors, students and parents demonstrating a high level of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Must deal pleasantly and courteously with students, staff, parents, visitors, etc. by telephone, written correspondence and in person in a professional manner.
  • Must have knowledge of appropriate telephone etiquette in answering the phone, taking messages and informing callers as to appropriate personnel.
  • A sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL according to the AIDB evaluation system must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide administrative support to Director of Transportation by typing and filing letters, memos, reports and general office duties.
  • Able to deal positively with frequent interruptions.
  • Greet visitors, answer telephone, relay messages to appropriate staff in a friendly manner and schedule appointments as needed.
  • Prepare and process transportation route information.
  • Enter work orders on the Maintenance/IT Work Order Systems as necessary.
  • Maintain complete inventory of Transportation equipment and supplies.
  • Order materials, forms and supplies and maintain records of the orders.
  • Prepare Student Incident Reports as needed.
  • Prepare payroll reports, travel forms, purchase requisitions, bus requests, and vehicle requests and submit in a timely manner to Transportation Director and/or appropriate AIDB department.
  • Take notes at meetings and distribute.
  • Maintain calendar and appointments for Transportation Director and staff.
  • Schedule and prepare reports of vehicles and buses for field and activity trips.
  • Keep accurate list of all bus routes.
  • Prepare fuel use reports, annual vehicle expense reports and update all vehicle records
  • Schedule vehicles in shop for service.
  • Maintain and update records for state-wide transportation services.
  • Assist with securing building as needed.
  • Maintain files in a systematic order.
  • Attend workshops and training sessions provided.
  • Works cooperatively as a team with other AIDB staff to best serve the students.
  • Deal with emergency situations in a calm and logical manner
  • Conduct self and dress in such a manner that sets a good example for
  • Prepare outgoing correspondence and reproduce records and materials as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director.

SALARY: $15.48 - $18.29 Scale C5 Rank 35 (260 Days)

Direct deposit is required.

This is a non-exempt position, and is subject to overtime and/or compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Upon agreement in advance, hours worked over 40 in the work week will be taken as time off at 1 times the hours worked.
