The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind and multi-disabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 36,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.



ABOUT THE ROLE

An AIDB Warehouseman has a broad range of responsibilities most of which involve

receiving and distributing goods throughout the Institute. AIDB Central Warehouse is

essentially a service department. Therefore, courtesy and efficiency are necessary

attributes of the AIDB Warehouseman. Food, custodial supplies, various educational

and office equipment and supplies are received and delivered on a daily basis. Along

with the receipt and distribution of goods the AIDB Warehouseman will also make

daily pick-ups at the Post Office dock, daily recyclable pick-ups, furniture deliveries and

perform a variety of other logistical duties.

ABOUT YOU

You will be an essential member of the logistics team at AIDB Central Warehouse. You

will become familiar with all schools and departments of AIDB in the local area. You will

be expected to conduct yourself courteously and professionally at all times. You will be

required to perform your duties in a manner that sets a good example, especially for the

students that we train. AIDB Warehousemen play a vital role in the daily operations of

the Institute by distributing the items that make it possible for all AIDB employees to

render the excellent services for which AIDB is known throughout the country. Flexibility

and a positive attitude will aid you greatly in this position. AIDB Warehousemen report to

the AIDB Central Warehouse Supervisor.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year experience in warehousing, delivery service or material handling preferred.
  • Must have experience driving mid-size truck or van.
  • Must have knowledge of safe lifting techniques.
  • Must be physically capable of manually lifting, moving, carrying and handling numerous boxes and containers weighing up to 80 pounds regularly.
  • Experience with filling out and keeping up with shipping documents preferred.
  • Must be able to give and follow written and oral instructions and driving directions.
  • Must be able to deal pleasantly and courteously with suppliers, customers and co-workers.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and with sensory impaired individuals.
  • Must have a valid Alabama Driver's License. Applicants must be able to be insured by the AIDB insurance carrier.
  • A sign language proficiency level of "SURVIVAL" according to the AIDB evaluation system must be obtained within the first thirty-six months of employment.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB."



PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:



May include but are not limited to any of the following activities:
  • Unload, count, inspect and verify items received.
  • Process warehouse paperwork as needed.
  • Sort, record proper information and distribute parcel company packages.
  • Pull and deliver food and supply orders.
  • Receive, rotate and stock incoming items.
  • Handle recyclables.
  • Deliver furniture, appliances and equipment to campuses.
  • Report vehicle and equipment problems to supervisor.
  • Keep vehicles clean and fueled.
  • Fill in for mail clerk.
  • Assist in taking physical inventory of warehouse stock.
  • Assist in keeping the warehouse and dock area clean and orderly.
  • Work with and help train students in warehousing, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



SALARY: $12.67 - $14.98 Scale C5 Rank 26

Direct deposit is required.

This is a non-exempt position and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
