ABOUT SPECIAL PROJECTS

AIDB's Special Projects Department is AIDB's collaborative effort to invest additional time and funding with deferral partners in order to support the mission of AIDB: To provide comprehensive education and service programs of superior quality to children with sensory differences and their families. It is our goal to expand services beyond our campus programs and even beyond our state borders.

Special Projects consist of Special Education Coordination, The NTID Regional STEM Center at AIDB, The Center for Assistive Technology Training, The Regional Early Acquisition of Language Project, Gallaudet University Regional Center, the Agriculture Education Program, and Short-Term Programs. In addition, Special Projects is expanding services within the new AIDB North Campus in Decatur, Alabama. Special Projects utilizes various technologies and networks to satisfy the collaborative needs of each department in order to achieve the overall mission.

Short-Term Programs are responsible for providing the highest level of care and education for students who are blind and visually impaired in the state of Alabama. This position will work with students are blind or visually impaired to provide in-depth psychological services with the goal of helping students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. Professionals in this position are tasked with successfully providing individual and group counseling services while maintaining documentation of direct services. This position will be responsible for intervention as it relates to the implementation and evaluation of programs to promote positive learning environments for all students from diverse backgrounds, and to ensure equal access to effective educational and psychological services that promote positive mental health development. The right candidate for this position will have a passion for working with students and colleagues to ensure all Short-Term Program students receive a world class experience that arms them with an abundance of knowledge and skills which enable them to live and function independently to the highest degree possible.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in the area of School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling or related counseling degree.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Provisional Certificate in School Counseling by completing the application process and meeting all requirements assigned by the Alabama State Department of Education with the first three years of employment.
  • Must exhibit excellent communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate competency in working with both sensory impaired and non-sensory impaired (i.e. staff/parents).
  • Knowledge of the Expanded Core Curriculum to be used with students who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of methodologies used to educate individuals who are blind and/or visually impaired.
  • Upon offer of employment the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctorate degree in the area of School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling or related counseling degree.
  • A valid Class A or Class AA Professional Educator Certificate in School Counseling.
  • Successful work experience in the field of counseling.
  • One (1) year or more experience working with children who are blind and visually impaired in an education or rehabilitation setting.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITES
  • Must demonstrate competency in reading and writing Braille by scoring 80% or better on AIDB Braille Skills Assessment Inventory within the first twenty-four (24) months of employment.
  • Orientation and Mobility training required within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • A minimum sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL must be obtained in the first twelve (12 months) and SURVIVAL PLUS in the first twenty-four (24) months.
  • Research and build curriculum for the Expanded Core Curriculum.
  • Consult with classroom teachers and parents regarding the impact of visual impairment on development and learning.
  • Serve as a case manager.
  • Cooperate with other STP teachers, staff, and district TVIs in planning and implementing the unique instructional program for students who are blind and visually impaired.
  • Keep abreast of current research and teaching strategies of the Expanded Core Curriculum for implementation in the classroom settings.
  • Protect confidentiality of student information.
  • Serve as a role model to students with professional behaviors.
  • Be familiar with Google Suites, Zoom, and Microsoft Office.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to include some weekends.
  • Uphold the professionalism and ethical standards of counselors.
  • Must be able to physically assist students as required.
  • Continue professional growth and development
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Director.
