As the Director of High School Department for Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD), you will be responsible for working in a partnership with other departments at ASD, AIDB units, Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE), etc. ASD is committed to meeting our students where they are. The right candidate for this job will have a passion for working with students and colleagues to ensure all students receive a world-class education.
ABOUT YOU
You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and be a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB and ASD. This will be accomplished by overseeing instructional services as well as demonstrating flexibility, a positive attitude, agility, and professional maturity.
BASIC QUALIFICATION:
- Minimum of a Master's Degree.
- Must possess an Alabama Teaching Certificate, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience as a teacher or administrator.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in writing.
- Must possess a sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL PLUS upon employment OR be able to obtain with in the first six (6) months of employment.
- Knowledge of IDEA and Special Education laws and regulations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess an Alabama Teaching certificate on the first day of employment with endorsements in Educational Administration and Hearing Impairment (HI/Deaf Education).
- Master's Degree in Special Education with an endorsement in Hearing Impairment (HI/Deaf Education) from an accredited college/university.
- A sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED upon employment.
MANDATORY ANNUAL TRAINING:

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have or obtain Educational Administration within thirty-six (36) months of employment.
- Must have or be able to obtain an endorsement in Special Education within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
- Must have or be able to obtain a Hearing Impairment (HI/Deaf Education) Certification within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
- Must possess a sign language proficiency level of INTERMEDIATE within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
- Must possess a sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the principal with the general administration, supervision, and management of the program unit including personnel, students (grades 7 - 12), facilities, equipment, and fiscal responsibilities assigned.
- Provide administrative leadership to the faculty and staff assigned to the program unit, which includes teachers, teacher aides, and volunteers.
- Supervise the maintenance of appropriate student records, supervise and review the preparation of student reports, evaluations, report cards, incident reports, etc.
- Coordinate and facilitate IEP meetings.
- Provide support to the Guidance Counselor for state assessments
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of curriculum improvement within the program unit in coordination with other departments.
- Provide leadership in coordination with ASD Management Team to maintain a plan for continuous improvement as part of the AIDB Strategic Plan, Accreditation (COGNIA and CEASD), etc.
- Constantly review the effectiveness and performance of each member of his/her staff. Assist and direct staff members in professional and personal development and improvement where needed. Complete performance evaluations on all staff.
- Document and provide guidance to high school staff members related to any employment requirements/agreements made when hired (CDL/Bus Driver License, Specific Certification, Sign Language Proficiency, etc.)
- Determine and prioritize departmental needs related to equipment, supplies, materials, etc.
- Manage departmental budget within budgetary allocations as per policies and procedures.
- Serve as instructional leader in the development and improvement of instructional programs in High School Education at ASD.
- Must possess knowledge of federal and state statutes and laws concerning educational administration and programming, particularly as they relate to disabled individuals.
- Must have extensive knowledge of current trends and issues in Deaf Education
- Must be able to develop and maintain rapport with staff members, students, parents, alumni, public school personnel, and other professionals and paraprofessionals within the school, AIDB, employers, and others external to AIDB.
- Plan, develop, and implement appropriate departmental in-service training programs for staff development in areas recognized as needed through appropriate needs assessment and evaluation, and as approved by the principal.
- Coordinate and assist with supervision with staff involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to High School including, but not limited to, clubs, classes, organizations, parties.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal.
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

SALARY: $53,873 - $93,151 Scale AI Rank 04
Salary listed is based on 260-days according to the AIDB calendar. This is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
