The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind and multi-disabled and their families. Our services literally span a lifetime including five campuses in Talladega, ten regional centers located in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Tuscumbia, Opelika and Decatur with programs that range from early to senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings and a manufacturing facility that is the state's largest employer of adults who are blind and deaf.

ABOUT SPECIAL PROJECTS

AIDB's Special Projects Department is AIDB's collaborative effort to invest additional time and funding with deferral partners in order to support the mission of AIDB: To provide comprehensive education and service programs of superior quality to children with sensory differences and their families. It is our goal to expand services beyond our campus programs and even beyond our state borders. Special Projects consist of Special Education Coordination, The National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) Regional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Center at AIDB, The Center for Assistive Technology Training (CATT), The Regional Early Acquisition of Language Project (REAL), Gallaudet University Regional Center (GURC), the Agriculture Education Program, and Short-Term Programs. In addition, Special Projects is expanding services within the new AIDB North Campus in Decatur, Alabama. Special Projects utilizes various technologies and networks to satisfy the collaborative needs of each department in order to achieve the overall mission. Specifically, Short-Term Programs are responsible for providing the highest level of care and education for students who are blind and visually impaired in the state of Alabama from public school, private school, or homeschool. Students in grades 6^th-12^th will attend three, four, or five day group or individual courses throughout the school year that focus on the Expanded Core Curriculum. Students attend in-person short courses at AIDB's North Campus in Decatur, Alabama as well as virtual courses to gain specific knowledge and skills while remaining enrolled in their local school district.

ABOUT YOU

The right candidate for this position will have a passion for working with students and colleagues to ensure all Short-Term Program students receive a world class experience that arms them with an abundance of knowledge and skills which enable them to live and function independently to the highest degree possible. This role will have a unique school calendar and will require schedule flexibility. This role will make effective decisions and solve problems using sound judgment, guided initiative, and team work. This role requires excellent listening skills, communication skills, and teaching skills. This will be accomplished by demonstrating flexibility, positive attitude, agility, and professional maturity. You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and be a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum High school diploma or equivalent.
Must have one year (1) of successful work experience in an educational setting.
Must be able to physically assist students as required.
Must be Servsafe certified OR become within 3 months of employment
Upon offer of employment the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with blind or visually impaired students.
Proven knowledge of Braille
Commercial Driver's License (CDL school bus).

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Knowledge of or willingness to learn Braille, including becoming a National Library of Congress certified Braille Transcriptionist within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
Orientation and Mobility training required within twelve (12) months of hire.
A minimum sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL must be obtained in the first twelve (12 months) and SURVIVAL PLUS in the first twenty-four (24) months.
Must be able to physically assist students as required.
May be required to possess a valid Alabama Driver's License and may be required to obtain a CDL and Alabama School Bus Driver Licenses within the first twelve (12) months of employment. Must maintain yearly certification for Alabama school Bus Driver License (if applicable) and valid Alabama Driver License.
Must complete and maintain CPR/First Aid, Medication and Behavior Management training within 12 months of employment.
Must complete a Foundation of Visual Impairment e-Learning course within the first twelve (12) months.
Research, build, and implement curriculum for the Expanded Core Curriculum.
Cooperate with other STP teachers in implementing the unique instructional program for students who are blind and visually impaired.
Assist teachers and staff with individual student(s) as assigned.
Assist teachers and staff with reproducing materials, checking papers, recording progress reports, filing, typing, delivering, copying, laminating, and performing other duties as needed.
Carry out instructional duties under teacher direction as needed
Deal with emergency situations in a clam and logical manner.
Use tact and friendliness with parents and all other non-staff personnel.
Transport and chaperone student(s) to, from, and while on field trips and other trips.
Attend departmental meetings, in-services, training sessions, and workshops provided.
Perform breakfast and lunch duty in dorm and cafeteria setting.
Assist with extracurricular activities.
Keep abreast of current research and teaching strategies of the Expanded Core Curriculum for implementation in the classroom settings.
Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to include some weekends.
Serve as a role model to students with professional behaviors.
Protect confidentiality of student information.
Be familiar with Google Suites, Zoom, and Microsoft Office.
Continue professional growth and development.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Director.

SALARY: $15.02 - $17.40 Scale C1 Rank 27 (High School/GED)

$15.81 - $18.45 Scale C1 Rank 29 (30 semester hours in related field)

$17.06 - $19.97 Scale C1 Rank 32 (60 semester hours in related field)

This is an exempt position and is not subject to overtime and/or compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act
