Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind and multidisabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 36,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.

Our services literally span a lifetime including five campuses in Talladega, 10 regional centers located in Birmingham, Decatur, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Opelika, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, and Shoals with programs that range from early and senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings and a manufacturing facility that is the state's largest employer of adults who are blind and deaf.


The E. H. Gentry Facility (EHG) Executive Director will provide visionary leadership, developing superior programs and partnerships within adult education and rehabilitation fields across the state and nation to drive best practices, tying outcomes to program development and expansion. The EHG Executive Director will be adept at teaming and team-building, internal and external public relations, grant-writing, data collection, strategic planning, and problem-solving while providing oversight of distinct, specialized educational, work experience and employment programs for individuals 16 and older who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind and those with other exceptionalities. The EHG Executive Director will possess sound judgement and strong leadership skills to include direct supervision, program evaluation and development, staff development, performance evaluations, and recruitment of new team members, students and partners. The EHG Executive Director has overall operations and fiduciary responsibilities and oversees multiple budgets and funding streams. The EHG Executive Director will represent AIDB at local, state and national consumer group activities as well as various state and national committees.


  • Minimum of a Master's degree in Education, Rehabilitation or related field.
  • Three years (3) relevant administrative experience in an educational agency, post secondary institution or rehabilitation agency.
  • Experience in counseling, teaching or administration in education or rehabilitation agencies that serve people with disabilities.
  • A sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL, according to the AIDB evaluation system, upon hire.
  • A sign language proficiency level of INTERMEDIATE, according to the AIDB evaluation system, must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and write effectively.
  • Must possess knowledge of federal and state statutes and laws concerning rehabilitation, workforce development, educational administration and programming, particularly related to persons with disabilities.
  • Must be able to develop and maintain rapport with constituencies such as staff; consumers; family members; program completers; consumer organizations; vocational rehabilitation personnel; public school personnel and workforce organizations.
  • Must be able to build collaborative support among staff, administration, Board of Trustees, and stakeholders for the benefit of the individuals the organization serves.
  • Must demonstrate mature judgment, integrity, individual initiative, and leadership qualities this position demands.
  • Must have an understanding of the cultures and needs of persons with hearing and vision differences and/or exceptionalities and have a work history that demonstrates actions and decisions with respect for and value of persons who are Deaf, Blind and DeafBlind.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.


  • Provide visionary leadership for all aspects of E. H. Gentry Facility.
  • Assign, supervise, coordinate and evaluate work of staff.
  • Provide leadership in comprehensive curriculum and staff development.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for the development of high quality programs so as to tap the unique talents, skills and abilities of the staff to the fullest benefit for the rehabilitation of the individuals we serve.
  • Collect student/consumer and program data to evaluate program success, student outcomes, and the progress made toward the implementation of strategic planning goals and objectives.
  • Ensure a safe and secure environment for students and staff.
  • Maintain Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International standards and coordinating accreditation visits.
  • Provide oversight and supervision of the Adult Education grant and budget along with other distinct grant opportunities and budgets.
  • Maintain professional competence and growth through participation in appropriate education/developmental activities and through organizational memberships, readings, conferences, courses, etc. to provide leadership to the profession.
  • Serve as a senior spokesperson for institutional programs and activities to the public.
  • Review and approve payroll, purchase requisitions, travel authorizations and travel vouchers.
  • Provide leadership for development and management of E. H. Gentry's budget.
  • Communicate the level/standard of excellence expected in the operation of residence facilities, food service, and all programs in which a consumer participates.
  • Make recommendations to the Chief Adult and Field Services Officer for the employment, assignment, transfer, dismissal and promotion of personnel.
  • Coordinate and work in cooperation with AIDB Board of Trustees, President, Chief Adult and Field Services Officer, Executive and Administrative Staff, Human Resources, and Legal Counsel in employee relations.
  • Supervise activities and ensure that the program maintains records necessary to comply with provision of State and Federal Laws.
  • Work closely with the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services to ensure that E. H. Gentry is responsive to the changing needs of consumers and of the employment market. Evaluate and establish consumer program completion standards to increase the number of individuals with hearing, vision and dual sensory loss served while increasing employment opportunities for these populations.
  • Participate as a contributing member of the AIDB Administrative Team, demonstrating an innovative and creative vision.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the position.

SALARY: $91,071 - $134,506 annually Scale A1 Rank 02

260 Days

Direct deposit is required; bi-monthly payroll

This is an exempt position and is not subject to overtime and/or compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
