The Braille Instructor is responsible for providing comprehensive pre- and post-skills assessments, one-on-one and group classroom and distance learning instruction, and specialized equipment recommendations for students who are blind or visually impaired. These services are provided to individuals in both residential and outreach settings across the state of Alabama. This position requires a passion for working with students, staff, parents, and community partners. The instructor will actively participate in the development and implementation of Individualized Educational instruction to meet each student's unique needs. You will document student progress and performance in a timely and accurate manner. Effective communication with students, staff, and partner organizations is a vital part of this position, requiring strong writing, speaking, and public relations skills to foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have obtained a Bachelor's degree, or have at least one year of experience teaching Braille.
- Must demonstrate competency in Braille by scoring 90% on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment upon offer of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Upon offer of employment, the applicant must successfully complete a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.
- Must obtain Library of Congress National Library Service in Unified English Braille Transcriber Certification OR obtain National Certification in Unified English Braille (NCUEB) within the first thirty-six (36) months of hire.
- Complete AIDB online training on Deafness, Blindness, Visual Impairments, DeafBlindness, and Multiple Disabilities within 12 months of hire.
- Proficiency in literary Braille and Nemeth Code is required. Familiarity with writing Braille using a Slate and Stylus is essential.
- Supervise and work cooperatively with teacher aides and interns assigned to the classroom to ensure a cohesive instructional team.
- Create, review, and update instructional materials and processes for both classroom-based and distance learning platforms.
- Actively participate in student staffing and team meetings to contribute to the development of student goals and strategies.
- Maintain adequate AIDB inventory of equipment, ensuring all materials are properly maintained and serviceable for student use.
- Stay abreast of current research and teaching strategies in the field of blindness and low vision education.
- Must possess or develop a profound understanding of the cultures and needs of persons who are Blind or DeafBlind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a deep respect for and value of individuals with sensory loss.

Scale MR Rank 4A (High School Diploma) $36,297.00 - $53,505.00
Scale MR Rank 4B (Bachelor's Degree) $41,391 - $62,775.30
Scale MR Rank 4M (Master's Degree) $43,353.45- $65,704.80
