As an American Sign Language Teacher for Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD) you will be responsible for working in a specialized classroom with students who are deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, and multi-disabled. ASD is a committed to meet our students where they are. The right candidate for this job will have a passion working with students and colleagues to ensure all students receive a world class education.

You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and be a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB and ASD. This will be accomplished by demonstrating flexibility, positive attitude, agility, and professional maturity.



BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Special Education or Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education from an accredited college/university.
  • Must provide documentation of sign language proficiency (SCPI) or take a sign language proficiency evaluation available through AIDB
  • Must possess sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED PLUS upon employment.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's Degree in ASL Studies, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, or Special Education from an accredited college/university.
  • Five (5) years or more of classroom experience.
  • A sign language proficiency evaluation of SUPERIOR upon employment.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have or be able to obtain an Alabama Teaching Certificate within the first six (6) months of employment date.
  • Must possess certification in Deaf Education within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Experience in the field of Deaf Education, ASL, Deaf Studies, or related field.
  • Experience working with deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and possessing the ability to communicate according to the AIDB Communication and Language Policies and Procedures will be considered.
  • Must participate in reasonable professional development related to ASL Instruction, Assessment, etc. as agreed upon with the department director.
  • A minimum sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED PLUS according to the AIDB evaluation system is required upon employment. A proficiency level of SUPERIOR must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Must provide documentation of sign language proficiency evaluation (SCPI available through AIDB).

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with Language Arts classes in grades 4th through 8th.
  • Participate in the development of and integration of the students' ASL linguistic goals based on their Individualized Education Plans (IEP) for each assigned student based on the school curriculum and state standards (if state standards are established).
  • Be willing to teach other subject areas as needed depending on schedule and/or student needs.
  • Develop, submit and implement course overviews, lesson plans, etc.
  • Develop and maintain a classroom learning environment conducive to individual student achievement.
  • Determine student programmatic needs relative to materials and supplies, and submit requests/recommendations as deemed appropriate.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the school's Communication and Language Policies and Procedures and adhere to these at all times.
  • Evaluate and report as deemed appropriate, student progress and modify student instruction accordingly.
  • Assist students in developing age-appropriate American Sign Language fluency including language-related social skills.
  • Provide ASL immersion experiences to new/developing signers.
  • Determine standards for classroom behavior and provide discipline measures for students according to the standards set by ASD Student Handbook.
  • Maintain such records and reports as deemed appropriate (grades, attendance, IEPs, testing, and etc.) and assist in explaining to parents.
  • Accept the responsibility of assignments made by the principal or department director which may include activities such as lunchroom duty, displays/bulletin board assignments, monthly theme activities, etc.
  • Initiate, plan, and cooperate in field trips as deemed necessary. Assist in the supervision of all ASD students on trips.
  • Develop and maintain a positive learning atmosphere and environment.
  • Cooperate and communicate effectively and professionally all matters regarding the student, the department, the school, and AIDB, to parents, other teachers, administrators, support personnel, related school staff, and the general public.
  • Punctual and regular in attending classes, meetings, conferences, and other school-related duties.
  • Responsible for effective utilization of teacher aides within the classroom setting as assigned by the Director.
  • Participate in workshops and staff in-service programs as scheduled.
  • Assist with in-service training for personnel within the school, state, or region.
  • Exhibit appropriate grooming and dress which serves as an acceptable role model for students.
  • Maintain working knowledge of AIDB Policies and Procedures, ASD Staff Manual, and ASD Student Handbook
  • Attend and/or assist in various extracurricular activities.
  • Assist with duties in department/departments assigned.
  • Deal pleasantly and courteously with students, families, co-workers, and staff from other departments by phone, email, and other written correspondence (including the many technical communication avenues available to adults and children).
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB
