As a School Library-Media Specialist for Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD), you will be responsible for providing leadership and expertise in acquiring and evaluating information resources in all formats. ASD is committed to meet our students where they are. The right candidate for this job will have a passion working with students and colleagues to ensure all students receive a world-class education.

ABOUT YOU

You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and be a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB and ASD. This will be accomplished by demonstrating flexibility, positive attitude, agility, and professional maturity.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Special Education, Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education, or related field from an accredited college/university
  • Must possess a sign language proficiency evaluation of INTERMEDIATE upon employment.
  • Must provide documentation of sign language proficiency evaluation (SCPI available through AIDB).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:
  • Master's degree in Library Science or Deaf Education.
  • A sign language proficiency evaluation of ADVANCED upon employment.

MANDATORY ANNUAL TRAINING:
  • Medication Training
  • Behavior Management recertification
  • CPR - every 2 years
  • Blood Borne Pathogens
  • Using an AED
  • Mandatory Reporting - DHR
  • Policy and Procedure Review
  • Erin's Law

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have or able to obtain an Alabama Teaching Certificate within the first six (6) months of employment date.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a HI Certification within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain School Library-Media Specialist Certificate within first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Supervise and assist in all services of the library.
  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures for preview, evaluation, selection, and use of materials.
  • Must possess the ability to maintain a working library (i.e., purchase and catalog materials, operate media technology housed in the library, conduct book fairs, etc.).
  • Maintain and purchase curriculum and subscriptions to be used in the classroom.
  • Manage library budget within budgetary allocations as per policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to teach library/reference and research skills to students.
  • Must be able to work with both staff and students, serve on school committees, and participate in school-sponsored activities.
  • Organize and provide materials, media, and equipment that are accessible for all students and staff.
  • Prepare work schedules for library program staff.
  • Establish and implement library program policies for cataloging, classification procedures, circulation distribution, and inventory for all library resources including campus technology.
  • Coordinate storytelling in American Sign Language.
  • Manage student activities and behavior.
  • Supervise work experience students.
  • Act as a liaison to the local public library and other agencies within the state.
  • Adhere to school board policies, administrative procedures, as well as state and federal guidelines pertaining to library services and personnel.
  • Determine student, class, dormitory department, and school needs pertaining to library services.
  • Attend faculty and committee meetings as assigned.
  • Organize, and coordinate book fairs, contests, and special events that relate to literacy.
  • Maintain library facilities in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Sign at all times on ASD campus and ASD sponsored events.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

.SALARY: $45,576- $60,322 Scale l1 Rank 2T (BS-Class B)

$53,422 - $69,719 Scale l1 Rank 1T (MA-Class A)

$56,872- $73,676 Scale l1 Rank AA (AA Certification)

This is a 197 days position. Salary is based on number of days worked.

Direct deposit is required.

This is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
