The Assistive Technology Computer Specialist/Trainer is responsible for providing skills assessments, equipment recommendations, classroom training, and field services. These services are provided to individuals and groups across Alabama. This position will be located at the Opelika Regional Center. This person must have a passion for working with students, staff, parents, and community partners. From assessment to goal achievement, this person will document services in a timely manner. Traveling across Alabama with opportunities to work in varied locations such as school systems, businesses, and individual's homes will be presented on a regular basis. Communication with students, staff, and our partner organizations is a vital part of this position, with strong writing, speaking, and public relations skills required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • A willingness to learn and understand methodologies used to educate individuals with visual impairments.
  • Possess advanced skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.) and Google Suite.
  • One (1) year of successful work experience in technology; such as direct service/training, computer service, maintenance or repair (including hardware/software installation and configuration or course work/certification in computer technology).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Post-secondary training in one of the following fields: Assistive Technology, computer science, Computer Technology, Information, and Technology Training, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of successful work experience in technology; including direct service, computer service, maintenance or repair (including hardware/software installation and configuration or course work/certification in computer technology).
  • Knowledge of Assistive Technology, including a background in the use of, CCTVs, screen magnifiers, screen readers, Braille translation software and OCR software.
  • Preference will be given to persons with background and work experiences with assistive devices for the Blind, Low Vision, DeafBlind, and physically challenged.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Complete AIDB online trainingon Deafness, Blindness, Visual Impairments, DeafBlindness and Multiple Disabilities within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must demonstrate competency in reading and writing Braille by scoring 80% or better on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment within the first twenty-four (24) months of employment.
  • Must be able to assist with training for low vision and blind consumers.
  • Must be able to use large print Assistive Technology software and devices.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot software and hardware problems with computers, printers, scanners, magnifiers, and Braille devices.
  • Must be experienced with installation, usage, and repairs of Windows and Apple operating systems.
  • Extensive travel with periodic overnight travel.
  • Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must spend a minimum of six weeks in Talladega for initial training. Accommodations may be provided by AIDB.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

SALARY:

$22.92 - $27.62 per hour C5 Scale 50 Rank (260 days)

This is a non-exempt position, and is subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
