The Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one component of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) which is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind, multi-disabled and their families.

AIB is the state's largest employer of persons who are blind or have significant disabilities. AIB has a manufacturing facility in Talladega, AL and Birmingham, AL. AIB also operates four Base Supply Centers in two states which are located on Redstone Arsenal, Fort Rucker, Robins AFB, and Moody AFB.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Quality Control Inspector role will be responsible for all quality control protocol responsibilities related to the manufacturing operations for Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB).

ABOUT YOU

You will play a vital role in assisting manufacturing operations as you will a part of the AIB team in producing high quality work. You will be required to perform your responsibilities in a manner that sets a good example for other employees to follow and demonstrate good leadership skills. Each employee should deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIB team to include coworkers, supervisors, Quality Control Coordinator and the Executive Manager. You must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in work assignments. The work schedule may require overtime. You may be required to fill in as needed in the role of production supervisor, line leader, production trainer, and/or production operations. This position reports to the Quality Control Coordinator.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate or a minimum three (3) years of work experience that required attention to detail, reading specifications and ability to comprehend written instructions.
  • Minimum one (1) year work experience of finished products against customer contract specifications.
  • Must possess computer skills in MS Office Suite 97 or later (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and a Google Account.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum six (6) months experience of sewn products in a manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum six (6) months of experience with ISO 9000 Quality Systems.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret work requirements from patterns, drawings and other standards.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Must follow AIDB policies and procedures.
  • Must be physically capable of standing and walking for extended length of time and lifting loads of varying sizes and weights on a regular basis.
  • Must have the ability to verify product status by confirming the product specification and conducting visual and measurement testing.
  • Must have the ability to verify in coming raw materials by confirming the product specification and conducting visual and measurement testing and reviewing product test reports, certificates of conformance and other receiving documents.
  • Must have the ability to read, understand and interpret work requirements from mechanical drawings, sewing patterns, engineering and military specifications.
  • Must have the ability to interpret and follow complex regulatory guidelines (military specifications and commercial item descriptions) and to follow established quality control practices.
  • Must have the ability to perform inspection/testing using tooling such as ruler, gauges, and optical comparison.


  • Must have the ability to document inspection results and maintain inspection records in accordance with ISO 9001-2015, Mil-Q-9858, Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR/DFAR) and other contractual requirements.


  • Must have the ability to evaluate problems and make initial recommendations for corrective action and root cause then communication with production, maintenance, and quality management.


  • Must be able to return products to operators for repairs/rework and verify effectiveness of repairs/rework.


  • Must be able to assist AIB manufacturing engineers to develop work methods to produce products and maximize blind labor opportunities.


  • May be required to travel to offsite manufacturing locations to perform quality control functions.
  • Must possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, blind or deaf/blind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss.
  • Must attend Disability Sensitivity Training Class and successfully pass with a 90% proficiency on the AIB Sensitivity Assessment within the first six (6) months of employment.


SALARY: Rank IB Scale 01 $11.36 - $13.06

This is a non-exempt position and is subject to overtime and/or compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Payroll Schedule - Semi-monthly, Direct Deposit is required.
