The Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one component of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) which is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are deaf, blind, deafblind, multi-disabled and their families.

AIB is the state's largest employer of persons who are blind or have significant disabilities. AIB has a manufacturing facility in Talladega, AL and Birmingham, AL. AIB also operates five Base Supply Centers in two states which are located on Redstone Arsenal, Fort Rucker, Anniston Army Depot, Robins AFB and Moody AFB.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Production Textile Material Operator role will be responsible for the operation of our Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) Cutting Room at the Talladega Manufacturing Plant. You will be required to cut textile material for use in the sewing and manufacturing operations.

ABOUT YOU

You will play a vital role in assisting manufacturing operations as you will be a part of the AIB team in producing high quality work. You will be required to perform your responsibilities in a manner that sets a good example for other employees to follow and demonstrate good leadership skills. Each employee should deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIB team to include customers, coworkers, supervisors, Plant Manager and the Executive Director. You must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in work assignments. You will need to be familiar with a manufacturing plant and the operations of the cutting room. This position reports to the Plant Manager, AIB.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum two (2) years of work experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing technologies.
  • Must possess computer skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word) and a Google Account.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate
  • Basic knowledge and operation of pallet jack.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Must follow AIDB policies and procedures.
  • May be required to attend conferences, in-service training and other functions.
  • Must be physically capable of standing and walking for extended length of time.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting, moving, carrying, and handling numerous boxes weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Follow all safety guidelines.
  • Perform all spreading and cutting of textile materials as per standard procedures and established patterns to meet demands of all AIB sewing and assembly operations.
  • Support all textile sewing production lines by operating spreading equipment, cutting knives, slitter and die cutters as required to meet production and customer demands.
  • When performing all work assignments, follow all quality requirements and specifications of the cutting table, die cutting and slitting processes.
  • Adhere to all customer or AIB supplied patterns to insure compliance with customer specifications.
  • Develop patters and markers to insure maximum material utilization during the cutting, die cutting and slitting operations making sure that waste is reduced and manufacturing costs.
  • Operations performed are spreading, cutting, bundling, counting, palletizing or packaging in the cutting room to provide a successful, efficient cutting room operation.
  • Perform all general AIB utility duties as assigned, which may require work performed in any of the various AIB manufacturing operations.
  • Work as a member of the product development team in new product samples or production trials.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean work area in the cutting room.
  • Must possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, blind or deaf/blind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss.
  • Must attend Disability Sensitivity Training Class within the first six (6) months of employment.


SALARY: $15.70 - $18.52 Scale IB Rank 34

This is a non-exempt position and is subject to overtime time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Payroll Schedule - Semi-monthly, Direct Deposit is required
