The Assistive Technology Specialist provides skills assessments, equipment recommendations and technical support which may include virtual machines and networking. This person provides these services to individuals and groups across Alabama, on our campuses, and at our ten regional centers. This person must have a passion for working with students, staff, parents, and community partners. The Assistive Technology Specialist will be involved from initial assessment to goal achievement. This person will document direct services in a timely manner. Traveling across Alabama with opportunities to work in varied locations such as school systems, businesses, and individual's homes will be presented regularly. Communication with students, staff, and our partner organizations is a vital part of this position, with strong writing, speaking, and public relations skills required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be able to construct computers, load software, and configure Windows computer systems
  • Must be skilled in diagnosing and repairing Windows computer systems
  • Must demonstrate willingness to learn and understand methodologies used to educate individuals with visual impairments.
  • Must possess advanced skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • One (1) year of successful work experience in technology; including direct service, computer service, maintenance or repair (including hardware/software installation and configuration or course work/certification in computer technology.
  • Post-secondary training in one of the following fields: Assistive Technology, Computer Science, Computer Technology, Informatics, and Technology Training, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of successful work experience in technology; including direct service, computer service, maintenance or repair (including hardware/software installation and configuration or course work/certification in computer technology).
  • Knowledge of Assistive Technology, including a background in the use of CCTVs, screen magnifiers, screen readers, and Braille devices.
  • Preference will be given to persons with background and work experiences with assistive technology that benefits the Blind and Deaf-Blind.
