The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world's most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind and multidisabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 36,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults, and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.

Our services span a lifetime including five campuses in Talladega and a statewide network of ten regional centers with programs that range from early and senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings, and a manufacturing facility that is the state's largest employer of adults who are Blind and Deaf.

ABOUT THE ROLE



The Director of Nursing is responsible for the comprehensive medical program operations at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind. This includes the supervision of nursing personnel at the Alabama School for the Blind, Alabama School for the Deaf, Helen Keller School of Alabama, E.H. Gentry, and the Alabama Industries for the Blind. Additionally, they are tasked with supervising the Dental Hygienist and coordinating the scheduling and operations of the Dental Clinic.

With a thorough approach to planning and execution, the Director of Nursing ensures the seamless implementation of care plans and competent management of medication administration for all students under our care. The Director of Nursing should demonstrate an understanding of regulatory compliance and current school nursing trends while striving to ensure the nursing department remains innovative with its methods and tools and adheres to best practices and laws regarding nursing and education in the state of Alabama.

The Director of Nursing should have excellent verbal and written communication skills to utilize when communicating with families, the general public, and/or any state or agency officials as a representative of AIDB.

In advancing the mission and vision of AIDB, the Director of Nursing must lead with integrity, empathy, and a strong commitment to excellence, ensuring our nursing departments consistently deliver high-quality care to those we serve.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Must possess current, unencumbered Registered Nurse licensure by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful relevant experience in supervision and/or other related professional supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of recent successful work experience in nursing.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified by the American Heart Association and must become a certified instructor within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must be knowledgeable regarding current laws and practices related to the provision of school health services, including current special education requirements and issues.
  • Must be willing to accept after-hours calls and occasionally fill in for absent nurses.



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Master of Science in Nursing.
  • Must possess current, unencumbered Registered Nurse licensure by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful relevant experience in supervision and/or other related professional supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of recent successful work experience in nursing.



POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Responsible for the daily operation of the AIDB Nursing Clinic and nursing stations.
  • Supervises the nursing staff per established regulations and standard practices of the nursing profession.
  • Supervises the Administrative Assistant, Dental Hygienist, and Dental Clinic coordination.
  • Assists the staff in decision-making and executing doctors' recommendations and orders.
  • Responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordinating nursing services for AIDB summer camps, summer assessment days, school registration, etc.
  • Responsible for providing nursing staff to accompany students with medical needs utilizing AIDB bus transportation.
  • Responsible for scheduling healthcare providers as required for sports and Medicaid screenings.
  • Plans and implements training and in-service education to AIDB staff (nurses, teachers, dorm staff, and other staff, etc.) as needed.
  • Responsible for implementing AIDB's Blood Borne Pathogen Policy and other yearly required trainings.
  • Researches and recommends policies and procedures regarding health-related services.
  • Monitors and updates procedures for dispensing medication at nursing stations: ASB, ASD, HKS, EHG, and AIB.
  • Maintains emergency on-call procedures for handling medical emergencies.
  • Responsible for maintaining an appropriate system of medical records which ensures the confidentiality of the records.
  • Provide nursing assistance to AIDB's consulting healthcare providers, as needed.
  • Collaborate effectively with parents, doctors, school systems, interdepartmental personnel, and various agencies to ensure the medical and health needs of students and consumers are met.
  • Perform general nursing responsibilities, as needed, to include direct nursing duties and accompanying students with medical needs.
  • Maintains appropriate data to support AIDB and Alabama Board of Nursing Surveys.
  • Responsible for the approval of purchase requisitions, maintenance work orders, payroll forms, travel authorizations, personnel actions, leave forms, etc.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and other staff professional development opportunities.
  • Responsible for reviewing files, assigning medical acuities for Admissions, and updating medical acuities as required.
  • Serves as a member of the File Review Committee and ad hoc member of the Admissions Committee.
  • Attends Human Rights Committee meetings and Health and Clinical Services leadership Team meetings.
  • Ensures the Executive Director of HCS is advised of issues related to the administration of the Nursing Clinic and nursing stations
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as have the ability to be on call.
  • Must complete AIDB online training on Deafness, Blindness, Visual Impairments, DeafBlindness and Multiple Disabilities within the first twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Must obtain a sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL within the first twelve (12) months, SURVIVAL PLUS within the first twenty-four (24) months and INTERMEDIATE within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of HCS.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.



SALARY: $54,950 - $95,014

260 Days
