ABOUT THE ROLE

The custodian role will be responsible for basic custodian functions of Alabama School for the Blind (ASB), Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD) and Helen Keller School (HKS)

ABOUT YOU

You will play a vital role in general housekeeping maintenance including paper and soap dispenser care, reporting plumbing and lighting problems and related activities. You will be a part of the AIDB team in producing high quality work. You will be required to perform your responsibilities in a manner that sets a good example for other employees to follow and demonstrate good leadership skills. Each employee should deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIDB TEAM. You must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in work assignments. This position reports to the Principal at each school campus.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Must have general knowledge of janitorial equipment and basic housekeeping techniques.
Must demonstrate enough vision to recognize and report safety hazards and clean effectively.

High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate

One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in custodial work or building and grounds maintenance work
Valid Alabama Driver's License
A sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL must be obtained within (12) twelve months of employment. A proficiency level of SURVIVAL PLUS must be obtained within (24) twenty-four months of employment. This is needed if hired at Alabama School for the Deaf or Helen Keller School.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associates Degree from an accredited college/university.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Must follow AIDB policies and procedures.
Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills.
Ability to prioritize tasks.
Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends or holidays if necessary.
Maintain a safe atmosphere for students and persons working in the building as well as all visitors.
Keep buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas, neat and clean at all times.
After opening the building each day at the designated time, check to make sure that all exit doors are working properly during hours of occupancy.
Daily, at the designated time, secure all doors and windows, and turn off lights except those left on for security reasons.
Clean restrooms and drinking fountains daily according to health department regulations.
Clean classrooms and corridors daily.
May be required to attend conferences, in-service training and other functions.
May be required to complete all online trainings assigned by the Principal.
Must be able to operate certain janitorial equipment such as buffers, floor sweepers and vacuum cleaners.
Must be physically capable of lifting, moving, carrying, and handling equipment and/or supplies weighing 30 pounds on a regular basis.
Ability to perform simple repairs of equipment and janitorial property.
Ability to work independently with minimum direct supervision.
Must possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, blind or deaf/blind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss.
Must attend Disability Sensitivity Training Class and successfully pass with a 90% to AIB Sensitivity Assessment within the first six (6) months of employment.
Must complete and maintain CPR/First Aid training within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
Maintain a high level of confidentiality standards.
May be asked to perform other duties, including cross-campus duties, as assigned by the Principal.
Other custodial/grounds duties assigned by the Principal.
Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB.

SALARY: $14.58 - $16.99 Scale C4 Rank 27

230 Days Direct deposit required.

This is an exempt position and is not subject to overtime and/or compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
