Job Description:

Reporting to the Department Chair of the World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Department, this position includes teaching the practica for DFST 101-2 (Elementary ASL), DFST 201-2 (Intermediate ASL), DFST 301 (ASL Comp and Conv), and DFST 303 (ASL Literature), assisting with Deaf Studies and Sign Languages Program events, and assisting with communication with CBL (Community-Based Learning) partners during the period of the appointment.

Teach practica for DFST 101-102 Elementary ASL, DFST 201-202 Intermediate ASL, DFST 301 ASL: Comp & Conv., and DFST 303 ASL Literature

The Teaching Assistant must attend ASL lectures and classes to prepare for the practica.

The Teaching Assistant must hold weekly office hours

Assist with communication with CBL partners for 201 and 202 classes as required by the DFST coordinator and faculty.

Deaf Studies and Sign Languages Program

Communication with DFST Coordinator and faculty.
Check emails daily and respond within 23-48 hours
Participate in ASL extracurricular events.

Assist continuing non-tenure track faculty members with community programming, including assisting with events and social media uploads.

This position starts mid-August of 2022 and will run through Commencement in May of 2023

Requirements:

Native fluency in ASL and familiarity with ASL pedagogy.

Minimum of two years of experience, preferably in an educational setting.
Knowledge of deaf culture.
Excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external constituencies.
Capable of developing a positive rapport with members of both the hearing community and the Deaf community.
Understanding and respect for Deaf culture and community.
Strong organizational, administrative, and budgetary skills with the ability to work independently, organize and manage time effectively, and make prudent decisions
